Ascoli Piceno


Situated in the valley of Tronto river, on an alluvial terrace between the deep flow of Tronto and Castellano rivers, which are the natural defence of the town.
Remarkable city of art for rests of roman and medieval periods, it was the most important town of Piceni people. Cecco D'Ascoli(1269-1327) was born in Ascoli; he was a poet a medical and astrologer and the Inquisition condamned him for heresy.

What to see

Piazza del Popolo is encircled by renaissance buildings and at a side there is the beautiful gothic construction of the church of S.Francesco that on the right flank supports the loggia of the merchants. Moreover the Palace of the Captains, the the SS. Vincenzo and Anastasio church (of 11th century), via of Solestà flanked from houses of the years 1400-1500 and that ends with the roman bridge of Solestà of roman age, Piazza Arringo with the old palaces of 13th century, the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Malatesta forte with the suggestive bridge of Cecco.
At the hill of the Annunziata there are the church and the cloister of the former convent and remarkable Roman ruins. The first Sunday of August in Ascoli there is the historical evocation of the Quintana (renaissance joust).
